Psychedelic heaviness from these master musicians – and Sir Richard’s first area appearance in almost 2 decades!
Six Organs of Admittance … Richard Bishop … Chris Corsano. Riders of the apocalypse, it’s them vs. us. After absorbing their uber-holy dynamo, you’ll be prepared to join up with these wraiths, making it all of us against…well, whomever’s fool enough to stand in our way. To evil!
Rangda’s been building up behind the scenes for some time now. As label mates and members of an exclusive mutual admiration society, Sir Rick and Kid Chasny thirsted for a conflagration involving two electric guitars plus a drummer. In such an environment requiring excellent survival skills as well as composition and improvisation rhythms, who better than Chris Corsano to work the skins? On paper, this was colossal, but actually getting everyone together proved awesomely impossible, with each man in a different city sprawled across the vastness of the United States — not to mention each man’s diverse state of mind sprawled across the vastness of inner space.
With special guests STARE CASE: Olson and Young from WOLF EYES! And STRANGE BREW. Presented by the Crofoot in association with the Burton Theatre.
8pm. $10.

Detroit (April 14, 2010) – A year ago the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (CAID) could not pay its utility bills, they were considering closing their main facility near Wayne State University, and their unpaid Executive Director, Aaron Timlin, gave notice that he was burned out and needed to step down. Today the same organization is partnering with the Detroit Land Trust, Inc. to develop a 10,000 sq ft building into an incubator for small artist run businesses such as a music label, a fashion design company, filmmakers, web and print designers, artists’ studio spaces, and more. Next month CAID plans to shoot the pilot to its new internet based television talk show and recently they announced plans to begin broadcasting a new independent radio station. Aaron Timlin is still working without pay as Executive Director, but he says he is happy to do so and is positive that he will soon be able to collect a salary after more than 2 years without one. What happened? “New Detroit happened,” says 39 year old Timlin. “I thought we were a fairly well run organization that was simply going through difficulties as a result of the recession,” says Timlin. “It wasn’t until we entered New Detroit’s Capacity Building Initiative earlier this year that I realized we only knew a fraction of what we needed to be successful.”
New Detroit was formed in response to civil unrest in 1967 that uncovered a host of entrenched social and community ills. The nonprofit tax exempt organization focuses on areas that represent the greatest potential threat to the community’s ability to achieve and maintain positive race relations. They focus their attention on five areas which include economic equity, education, race relations and cultural collaborations, youth development, and community capacity building. “Our capacity building efforts offer expertise to organizations in the areas of organizational development, program development, information technology, financial management, research, evaluation, fundraising, strategic planning, and board development,” says Sonia Plata, Director of Community Capacity Building. “Before entering the program at New Detroit, CAID had a mission statement. Now we have a vision statement, a values statement and a set of specific goals,” says Oneita Porter, CAID’s board chairperson. “After every workshop, Aaron comes back excited and ready to take on the world,” says Porter. “It is great be part of this renewed sense of hope and transformation that our organization, staff and board are going through.”
Last week, after participating in New Detroit’s program for only three months, CAID received news that the State of Michigan, through the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, will award grant money to support their intergenerational program The Imagination Project. The program will provide digital animation instruction and mural making classes to at risk youth working with senior citizens in the Southwest Detroit area. To help leverage the state funding, CAID has submitted additional grant requests to local foundations and corporations. “It’s an important endorsement,” says Timlin. “And it’s an attest to the work New Detroit is doing. They’re creating a monster,” he says smiling. “And that’s a good thing. A monster of change that has a positive, meaningful and lasting impact on the communities all of us serve.” His enthusiasm is contagious.
